ArtsWeek Events

The Library is hosting Blast Off: Apollo Art at 1:30. BUT…it’s full!

The Public Art Commission is holding an Open House from 4:30-7PM at the Golden History Museum. Meet commission members, discuss current and future projects, and give input on the public art process and direction in Golden. Hear from Muralist Victor Ving and photographer Lisa Beggs, commissioned artists for the Golden History Museum Mural, “Greetings from Golden” as well as Joe Norman, commissioned artist for the recently installed Highway 93 Entryway Piece, “Run & Fly” sculpture.

From 9-10:30 tonight, a local artists collective, GLDN, will screen the 1920’s silent film, “Man With a Movie Camera” by Deziga Vertov. This part documentary, part cinematic art piece is hailed for its use of complex and groundbreaking camera work. A live house band will play an original score to accompany the entirety of the film while a few lucky audience members will be selected to contribute sound effects. You’ve never seen a silent film like this before. More information….

5PM – The second and final night of the Golden Community Rodeo will include a downriver race for all crafts sponsored by Colorado Whitewater. No registration is necessary. Simply show up prior to 5:30 on competition day to sign up for a category. Come have some fun or come cheer on the kayakers! Learn more….

6:30PM – The Planning Commission will have a study session in City Council Chambers. They are continuing to discuss the size and character issues that initiated the moratorium on building in R2-zoned neighborhoods. The planning staff did some interesting research for this meeting. They will be discussing how dormers can be incorporated with a house to increase living space without significantly increasing the external “bulk” of a house. The Commission will discuss recommended size and placement limits, based on some recommendations by the planning staff. In trying to tie the code more closely to the Golden Vision, there has been a lot of discussion about “neighborhood character.” In an effort to pin down what that means, the staff surveyed the R2 neighborhoods to determine the era in which most building occurred and the prevalent types of housing. Interestingly, our R2 neighborhoods have far more single family homes than townhomes, duplexes, apartments, etc. I encourage you to look at the meeting packet to see what the planners discovered….

7-8:30PM – Dinosaur Ridge is beginning their “Dinosaur Ridge After Dark” series with an evening of Molding & Casting with Chocolate. Yes, you read that correctly…chocolate. The evening will start with an exploration of our Trek Through Time exhibit hall and flow into a discussion and introduction of molds and casts. Attendees will learn about the molding and casting process before trying their hands with chocolate molds. Instructors will be on hand to explain and showcase the molding process as well as detail the difference between a cast and the “real thing.” Attendees will take their chocolate molds (white and milk) home with them…if they aren’t devoured at the event. *Fair Trade Chocolate Suitable for 18+ adults. $15 for members and $20 for non-members. Maximum attendance is 30, and you must register here….
