Mountaineering Museum Reception, City Council Discusses Transportation and Finance Plans

From 6-8 this evening, the Mountaineering Museum will hold an Art Show Finale for their Fred Doar show: Mountaineer and artist Fred Doar’s art has graced the walls of the Museum for the summer, but now it’s time to take his gorgeous art down. We want to end the show with a bang! And wine. And cheese. And Fred! Join us for the finale of Fred Doar’s show “A Few Legends of Altitude.” The event includes free admission to the Museum, a presentation by Fred, and two new paintings.

The Library’s DIY Lab will be making Hot Air Balloons from 6-7:30. Move molecules and explore thermal energy. Float to your destination and build a tissue paper balloon, then use hot air to make it soar. This program is for ages 12+.

City Council will meet at 6:30 in City Council Chambers. City Staff will provide an overview of two proposed transportation ballot issues. Council may choose to create a resolution in support of one of the issues.

They will discuss the conclusions of the Investment Task Force. That group spent the most recent meeting discussing questions to be included in a Citizens Survey, to help determine whether we should put a lodging tax on the ballot, and if so, how the proceeds of such a tax should be used. Council will discuss much larger financing issues, including projects that didn’t poll well in the Investment Task Force’s survey, such as solar improvements and city-wide broadband. Most of the City’s discretionary money for 2019 will fund the north Washington Avenue project. Most of the 2020 discretionary money will go to improvements in municipal facilities, such as upgrades to the community center and Splash, designing new storage space for the police, buying the street lights from Xcel, acquiring new fire equipment, and making information technology upgrades.

The City will finish paying off the debt for the golf course, water park, and community center in 2021, so at that point our annual debt payments will be $2.4 million less. City Staff has been looking at our bonding capacity once those projects are paid off, and have concluded that we would be able to borrow up to $43 million for new projects.
