Golden History Moment

C.E. Parfet Groceries – Golden History Museum Collection – click to enlarge

The building at 922 Washington Avenue (map) was built in 1892 for grocers Nankivel & Jones. When their firm went under in 1893, the building was purchased by C.E. Parfet. Parfet sold the business to Parshall & Stewart in 1897.

Parshall retired at the end of 1901 and E.E. Stewart became the sole owner. The grocery store continued to operate until 1938. In 1939, the building became a laundromat.

Mr. Stewart died in 1945, but his building still bears his name.
