Golden History Moment
On March 24, 2021 my friend Frank Hanou invited me to tour the Coors office building, which was in mid-demolition at the time.
The office building was completed in 1981. It had a central atrium, filled with trees and planter boxes, an employee cafeteria, wellness center, and childcare center. The windows provided views of the brewery, the creek, and the mountains. The executive floor included a tap area with views of the front range.
In 2019, Coors contacted the City to say they would be selling the building and adjacent property. The City wanted more room for city staff, the history museum, a cultural center, and affordable housing, so they bought it from Coors. Here’s some must-watch TV: the City’s presentation to Council on this project.
They later decided that the building would not meet the City’s needs, so they demolished it. The Heart of Golden project is designed to solicit public comment regarding how the property should be used and what the City should build next. That page includes an interesting time lapse video showing the “deconstruction” of the office building.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
