In honor of Memorial Day, the Golden Cemetery is lined with flags today.  You should go visit!  The Honor Guard from our Golden VFW Post 4171 will conduct a flag service in the Veterans section at 11.

In addition, the United States Congress has designated the minute beginning at 3 PM local time as a time for all Americans to observe the National Moment of Remembrance.  Also, on a local level, Mayor Sloan has designated the hour beginning at 11 AM as a time to unite in prayer.

The City recently posted an article about some restoration work that the cemetery is doing on some of the older headstones.  The article shows the headstone of Jesse Quaintance, and mentions the family’s prominence in Golden.  The Quaintance family ran the Castle Rock funicular, and, in fact, still owns Castle Rock.  While most of South Table Mountain is now Open Space, Castle Rock itself is not.

There will be a Memorial Day ceremony at the Marine Corps Memorial (map) this afternoon at 2.  The Memorial honors the overall service of the U.S.M.C. as well as specific units, special corps (such as FMF Corpsmen and Women Marines) and various wars. Please use the parking area off the access road between 6th and Colfax on the west side of the Memorial.

If you’re thinking of visiting one of our craft breweries today, consider Barrels & Bottles.  Zach (of Zach and Abby–the owners) is a former Marine!
