Meetings, Museums, Music, and Margaritas

9AM – The Public Art Commission will meet in City Council Chambers. They will be finalizing events and responsibilities for Artsweek Golden (which is just around the corner–July 8th-14th). They will discuss their plan to paint murals in many places around town, and their plan to turn seven signal boxes into objets d’art. They are printing an “Artventure” book, that people will use to tour Golden’s public art. See the meeting packet for more info….

10AM – The Railroad Museum is celebrating Thrilling Thursdays with railroad related crafts and demonstrations. Today’s focus is Pullman Porters. Bring your kids, grandkids and friends to learn about all things railroads!

4PMThe City will conduct a public hearing to consider information concerning the execution and delivery by the City of a Lease Purchase Agreement of the 160,000 square foot office building on a 3.5 acre parcel of land located at 311 Tenth Street. The City plans to turn the building into a Civic Center. You can learn more about the planned project at GuidingGolden.com/golden-civic-center. See the Notice of Public Hearing for the full scope of all that will be discussed during the public hearing.

Where you can’t go:
As predicted, the Civic Foundation’s Golden Summer Jam and Foothills Animal Shelter Hoppy Hour are both sold out. (Have fun, everyone who got tickets!)

Where you can go:
6-8PM – Here’s some consolation: Table Mountain Inn is hosting Margarita Alley from 6-8PM. Stop by the exclusive Margarita Alley to explore free appetizers, beer and tequila tastings, plus live music! Surrounded by cool ambience in the hidden Kokopelli patio, guests feel like they found a Southwestern speakeasy to relax in.

6-8PM – Member Preview at Foothills Art Center – Evolving Perceptions: Studio Art Quilt Associates, CO/UT/WY Region

6:15-8:15PM – Surprisingly, there are still a couple of openings in the Flower Power Cooking Class at Earth Sweet Botanicals. Call the store to grab one of the spots: 303-278-1260.

6:30PMCity Council will meet in City Council Chambers. They will consider updates to our Building, Electric, Plumbing, Mechanical, Energy Conservation, Fuel Gas, Residential, and Fire Codes. They will hold a public hearing on a proposed zoning change for the Overlook Property to allow commercial development on this 27 acre parcel. Neighboring residents are very opposed to this change, primarily because of the increase in traffic that would have to go through their neighborhood. City Staff will update Council on the inspections taking place on the Coors property. There will be a public hearing and a vote on the method of financing $25 million to buy the municipal center. They will consider a request to permit outdoor seating for the new businesses going into the former mortuary at 1100 Washington.

Council will also discuss several issues about the parking lot between 12th & 13th/Arapahoe and Miners Alley. The lot is consistently full (photo above notwithstanding), so there is some discussion of forcing downtown employees to park elsewhere (in the parking garages). The south half of the lot belongs to the Foss family, and they’re considering resuming control of their half, and blocking it off from the City half. The Stillman family (Ace Hi) needs to build a new trash/recycling enclosure and the only available place to do it is in that parking lot. Lots of interesting topics tonight…see the meeting packet for the details.
