WHAT’S HAPPENING IN GOLDEN TODAY?

8AM Clear Creek Corridor Clean-Up – Meet @ Golden History Museum
You are invited to help City staff clean up the Creek corridor.

NEW! Due to increased use of the creek and the unfortunate amount of trash users are leaving behind, the City is now asking for volunteers on both Monday and Thursday mornings.

We will meet at 8 a.m. on the creekside patio of the Golden History Museum. Volunteers should check in at the table on the patio to sign in and receive any necessary gear and instructions for the activity. We will begin around 8:00 a.m., and volunteers may help for as long as their schedule allows.

Volunteers should wear appropriate clothing, which may include long pants, long-sleeved shirts, hats, and sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Don’t forget sunscreen, insect repellent, and a water bottle! Volunteers may bring their own work gloves and trash collection bags if they’d like. Safety vests, gloves, bags/buckets, and other needed tools will be provided.

IMPORTANT: All volunteers will be required to sign a participation waiver to join us to clean up. This is an independent volunteer activity so children must be under the direct supervision of a parent or adult guardian at all times.

If you would like to volunteer for creek clean-up on a different day or time, please email Rheana Rogers at
rrogers@cityofgolden.net to coordinate. Sign up today.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

1873 Birdseye View Map of Golden, with modern street names in red and a few remaining landmarks also labeled in red – enlarge

I often use excerpts from the 1882 Birdseye Map of Golden (the brown one) to show buildings from our early days. This one is even earlier–1873!

The railroad was here by then, but you’ll notice that the School of Mines isn’t there yet. The large building on the Mines campus was the new Golden School–elementary through grade 12, all in the same building. A few years later a second school was built on the north side of the Creek, and after that they were called North School and South School. Both the North and South Schools were demolished in 1965.

Several of the buildings on the west side of Washington Avenue were there already–the Loveland Building (Old Capitol Grill), the former mortuary at 11th & Washington, the Everett Building (now Goozell Yogurt), the Harrison Block (Creekside Jewelers). The Astor House appears on this map, as does Calvary Church and the Presbyterian Church (now Foothills Art Center).

Notice the mill race running parallel to the Creek on the north side. It powered two flour mills and a paper mill. The creekbed was much wider in the 1870s. Since that time, we’ve made the channel deeper and built up the land on both sides through downtown.

Enjoy the map!

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
