Foothills Art Center is hosting a Members-only exhibit opening reception tonight from 6-8PM featuring Charles E. Burchfield Resounding Roar. The sounds of nature, industry and humanity would inspire Burchfield throughout his career. Early works depict the sound of crickets as they chirp away in the bushes around his childhood home. The resounding roar of a passing train or the delicate call of a bobolink could be imputes for a series of works lasting decades. Later works are inspired by his favorite composers Ludwig van Beethoven and Jean Sibelius. Charles E. Burchfield: A Resounding Roar presents the artist’s love and appreciation of different sounds and the works he made in response to them.
While there, you can also see their “Finding Home” exhibit. You must be a member to attend, but that’s easy to achieve: for as little as $35, you’ll have free admission to the museum and member events for a full year. Join here or at the door.
Don’t forget tonight’s Ladies Only Sample Tour. Grab your umbrella and some lady friends and cruise the stores and restaurants, sipping, nibbling, and collecting samples as you go!
The Dove Inn has new owners, and they’ve been doing some remodeling. Please join them for their Grand Re-Opening and Ribbon Cutting at 5:30 tonight, then stay and tour the Inn. They’ll be welcoming visitors until 8:30. (You know you’ve always wanted to see that place!) 711 14th St. map
The Friends of the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum are hosting their First Thursday Lecture. Tonight’s Topic: Colorado Kimberlites (that’s diamonds!). Tonight’s speaker is Philip M. Persson, geologist and mineral collector.
Colorado is justifiably famous around the world for its colorful and spectacular minerals, including amazonite, smoky quartz, aquamarine, topaz, and more. However, the state also hosts a significant diamond-bearing kimberlite district; rare rocks which have transported gem-quality examples of the “ultimate mineral” from deep in the earth. While not as well-known as Arkansas’ Crater of Diamonds or recent discoveries in northern Canada, the State Line Kimberlite District is nonetheless one of the most important diamond-bearing occurrences in North America.
Socializing and munchies begin at 6:30 p.m. The “First Thursday” lecture will start at 7:00 p.m. Ben H. Parker Student Center, Ballroom “E.” (map).
Golden High School‘s Stage Right Productions will perform A View From the Bridge this weekend. It sounds like an interesting play…learn more. Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights at 7PM and Saturday afternoon at 2PM. Golden High School is located at 701 24th Street (map).
Last Night
Both the Calvary plan to vacate Arapahoe Street and the new 4-plex in the East Street neighborhood passed at last night’s Planning Commission meeting. The residents surrounding the two houses that will be scraped and replaced made some heart-rending appeals. The Planning Commission noted that the zoning allowed the new development and that the zoning was the result of a community process. Ford Street is targeted for “significant change.”
