Longer Days, Persistent Presbyterians, and Rubbing at the Quilt Museum

Original Baptist Church, at 12th and Jackson

Daylight Savings Time starts today. Did you remember to set your clocks forward? If not, are you late for something right now? Is it time to panic?

50 Years Ago Today
The First Presbyterian Church of Golden was celebrating their 100th anniversary. I wonder if they’re celebrating their 150th this morning? The Presbyterians formed their congregation in 1870, when Golden itself was a scant 11 years old. For the first two years, they met in the Baptist church on Sunday afternoons.

Their own church, which is now Foothills Art Center, was completed in 1872. By the 1930s they were over-crowded in that church, but couldn’t afford to expand during the Depression. In the 1940s, they built a large addition on the west side of church.

By the mid-1950s, a growing congregation encouraged the Presbyterians to build a new church on 16th Avenue. They particularly wanted a large Sunday School wing (can you say “Baby Boom?”).

Their former church at 15th and Washington housed the Jefferson Unitarians until they moved to their new digs on 32rd Avenue in Applewood in 1967. Foothills Art Center was just a concept in 1967, but by 1968 they were moving into the 1870s-era former Presbyterian Church.

Happy 150th Anniversary to the First Presbyterian Church of Golden!
