Golden History Moment
The October 28, 1980 Golden Transcript reported that the Golden Jaycees had built a haunted house inside the Transcript offices at 1000 10th St.
Their “10 rooms of horror” were open each night through Halloween. Admission was $1 per person.
The Jaycees had spent about $1200 on the project, and they hoped to make about $5000. The proceeds would be used for community projects. They reported that Jaycees clubs were running haunted houses all over the metro area, but that Golden’s house had the lowest admission price.
The club promised that visitors to “The Haunted Tomb” would be encountering a dungeon, Lizzie Borden, a haunted graveyard, Darth Vader, a witches room, and an abominable snow monster.
They planned to dismantle the structure at the end of the season and use it again the following year.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
