The local licensing authority will review two transfers of ownership–the first is Golden Village Liquor (map) and the second is Golden Town Liquor (map).

There will be a public hearing regarding a New Tavern Liquor License for King of Wings (map). This hearing was continued from April 18th because the Golden police had some questions about the two owners.

6:30PM City Council Regular Business Meeting @ City Hall
Tonight’s Consent Agenda sets July 25th as the date to review an application to rezone 3.53 acres at 17270 W. Colfax (map) from C-1 to Planned United Development.

They will read one proclamation tonight, celebrating the 4th of July.

They will considering adopting the South Neighborhoods Plan.

They will approve a license agreement that will allow several small encroachments into the public right of way at the Golden Hills Mobile Home Park.

Proposed single family homes development of the Overlook District

They will hold a public hearing regarding the Golden Overlook district, which was originally planned as a residential subdivision, then reimagined as a site for personal warehouses. Now the property is once again being evaluated for development into single family home sites. Council will be asked to approve an amendment to the service plan for the district.

Tonight’s second public hearing concerns the proposed annexation of 52.42 acres of land located north of the Canyon View Business Park. This hearing will not finalize the annexation; it will determine whether the property is eligible for annexation.

They hold the first reading of an ordinance regarding the proposed annexation. The second reading and public hearing will be on August 8th.

They will consider a resolution amending the rules of procedure to allow board and commission members to attend meetings virtually, using Microsoft Teams.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

Donovan Affair 2 poster.jpg
The first “talkie” shown in Golden – image source: Wikipedia

The June 20, 1929 Colorado Transcript announced that the Gem Theatre was installing equipment that would allow them to show “Talkies.” The first movie with sound would be shown on Friday June 21st: The Donovan Affair.

The article explained that, in addition to the work of installing the “talking equipment,” the theater manager had to work on the acoustics of the theater. He installed 600 yards of draperies on the walls to deaden sound and do away with echoes. He was still working to overcome spots in the theater where the sound didn’t carry. The theater planned to continue offering a special low price on Thursday evenings, with silent movies costing 10-25 cents and talkies costing 15-30 cents, “which is considerably lower than most theaters which are running the high class of pictures shown at the Gem.”

The following week’s Transcript reported that Golden movie fans greeted their first Talkie enthusiastically, and that the acoustics were perfect!

I had hoped to provide a link to the movie, so we could all recreate that magical Golden “first Talkie” experience, but the only print I could find online lacked the dialog. With a little more research, I learned that the soundtrack had been lost, so now only the video portion of the film is left.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
