The Library is hosting Adult Makers Lab today from 12:30-2:20. Calling all makers! Have a project idea but not all the tools? Want to learn a new skill? Golden’s DIY Lab gives you a place to meet other tinkerers and use our Maker Space to work on your latest project. Become part of a like-minded community of adults while exploring the possibilities, from fiber arts to hand tools to robotics. Suitable for: Adults.

Monday night’s Golden Safety Academy, which is hosted by the City’s Police and Fire Departments, will cover Concentric Circles of Protection, including CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design), Landscaping, Lighting, Fencing, Garage/Shed, Lock and Door Systems, Window Security, Intrusion Detection Systems Video Surveillance Systems, False Alarms, Vacation Watch, and Home Security Survey Sign-up. Tuesday Night (March 13th)
This month’s Golden Beer Talk features Cartographer Cahterine Costello of the USGS, discussing Mapping & Tracking Wildland Fires. The Geospatial Multi-Agency Coordination (GeoMAC) app is an internet-based mapping application originally designed for fire managers to access online mapping of locations and perimeters for wildland fires burning in the United States. With a standard web browser, GeoMAC allows fire personnel to view and pinpoint affected areas. With growing concern over western wildland fires, the app became available to the public in 2000. Today, GeoMAC is the primary source for all wildland fire perimeters, and in 2017 the app—including website and data services—received almost 1 billion hits. Learn more….
Golden History Roundtable (starting March 24th)
A lot of people have been asking me about this. So far, we’ve had one planning meeting. About 12 people came and discussed topic ideas. Some of us signed up to research subjects and give talks.
Possible future topics include: mining, entertainment, antique postcards, haunted history, funiculars, KKK in Golden, outlaws in Golden, Goosetown, industries, historic newspapers, founding golden, maps, history of water, Railroads in Golden, the stolen capitol, fires/floods/disasters, dinosaurs, human history of South Table Mountain, Golden library, Golden Cemetery, early preservation efforts, “Firsts,” Golden bricks, historic buildings, CSM’s history, the Industrial School, Golden’s historic churches.
Several people have volunteered to give talks: Frank Blaha will talk about Golden’s water history, Paul Haseman will talk about “the stolen capitol,” Bill Litz of Golden Landmarks will talk about Goosetown, Barb Warden will cover Golden’s Railroad History, Jo Barber will give the history of Golden’s library, Stacy Fowler (owner of The Golden Hayride) will describe Golden’s Haunted History, and Rick Gardner will give a tour of the Golden Cemetery.
I’m going to do an overview of Golden in the 19th Century for the first one, on March 24th from 2-3:30. The remaining dates/times for the year are 4/28 from 12-1:30, 5/19 from 2-3:30, 6/16 from 2-3:30, 7/21 from 12:30-2, 8/18 from 12:30-2, 9/15 from 12:30-2, 10/20 from 11:30-1, 11/17 from 3:30-5, 12/15 from 11:30-1.
Right now, the plan is to have all meetings in the Golden Library, but we have been contacted by people who would like to host meetings at their locations, so we’ll explore that possibility.
