After Dark Winter Wonderland Walks + Golden’s Holiday Light Display
Golden’s impressive holiday lights transform the charming town into a winter wonderland with downtown, the Clear Creek Walking Path, Golden History Park, Parfet Park and the Visitors Center spectacularly illuminated with an estimated 45,000 bulbs. A single giant evergreen tree in front of the Golden Visitors Center is wrapped in approximately 5,000 lights all on its own. Start a new family tradition and bundle up, pick up hot cocoa at a Golden coffee shop, and enjoy an evening walk with holiday lights reflecting in the icy waters of Clear Creek and in the downtown shop windows.

Golden History Moment

January 3, 1951 Colorado Transcript Headlines

The January 3, 1951 Colorado Transcript was brimming with post-war optimism and a determination to do away with the old world and build the new.

Jefferson County’s schools had all been consolidated into a single School District, under the leadership of Golden’s own Roger Q. Mitchell. Golden’s over-crowded schools were going to be relieved with construction of an addition to the high school building and a new elementary school in Pleasant View.

Construction of Coolbaugh Hall of Chemistry was underway, and new “permanent-temporary” student accommodations were in place in Prospector Park.

Golden’s Pioneer Park had been acquired by the County. The trees had been removed and the site leveled in preparation for building a new courthouse. The new building would have fireproof records storage and space for parking.

An automobile highway was under construction through Clear Creek Canyon.

Both Coors Brewery and Coors Porcelain continued their post-war expansions.

Safeway was constructing a new and larger store (with its own parking lot) on Ford Street.

The Masonic Hall on 10th Street was nearing completion.

Attendance in Golden’s churches was high. The Transcript attributed this to concern over “the dangers of an all-out war.”

Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
