Golden History Moment

Photo from the March 31, 1975 Golden Transcript

The March 31, 1975 Golden Transcript featured a front page spread about the bombing of the City’s dog warden truck. “The blast, which went off at 10:23 Sunday night, could be heard over five miles away. A cat which had been caged in the truck was killed in the explosion.”

The truck, which had been parked behind city hall, had an aluminum topper over the bed. The Jefferson County bomb squad was called in. They concluded that 2-3 sticks of dynamite had been placed in one of the cages.

The April 1st Transcript said that the police were following leads provided by two witnesses. One saw a vehicle driving away shortly before the explosion and one saw a man walking away. No motives had been identified.

The April 8th Transcript recapped the event and said there were “No leads in city bombing.” I searched the paper for the rest of the year, and apparently the responsible party was never identified.

Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
