Golden History Moment

Coors Porcelain, circa 1920s – Click to enlarge

COORS THERMO-PORCELAIN

by Bill Robie

The Coors Porcelain Company evolved into the world’s leading manufacturer of quality industrial and scientific porcelain after World War I when German high quality ceramic imports were banned. By the 1920’s and into the ‘30s, the company had diversified into the production of utilitarian hotel and institutional cooking and serving ware. From there, it expanded into various lines of durable, high-fired porcelain dinnerware.

By the 1930’s and ‘40s, Coors Porcelain was producing a large number of interesting products. Besides the well known chemical, industrial and laboratory ware, they made beer mugs, ashtrays, vases, salt and pepper shakers, and a full line of dinnerware. Even some promotional figurines and ashtrays for other companies including the hard to find clown bank. They even made the ceramic storage crocks for the COORS PURE MALTED MILK powder.

The most well-known and popular of the dinnerware items was the “Cook-N-Serve” “Rose Bud” pattern. This line of common, every-day tableware was produced from about 1934 to 1942. It was a “low-fired pottery” and colored in blue, yellow, green, rose, and white. The distinctive rose bud pattern was produced in low relief on almost every one of the pieces. There were plates, cups, saucers, platters, bowls, casseroles, pitchers, tea pots, cookie jars and many other items. Rose Bud items can occasionally be found today in antique shops, yard sales, and flea market environments.

Coors also produced during the same approximate time period tableware under the brand names Rockmount, Mello-Tone, Golden-Ivory and Golden-Rainbow, and Thermo-Porcelain.

The Coors Thermo-Porcelain line was the most elegant and beautiful of all the tableware products. The pieces were fired at a higher temperature than the Rose Bud “pottery’ in a continuous tunnel kiln along with the scientific ware. One of the Thermo-Porcelain lines produced highly vitrified white ceramic pieces that were hand painted with either gold or silver color floral designs.

The prettiest of the Thermo-Porcelain lines was the “Decalomania” with decorations in five patterns: Garden, Tulip, Floree, Chrysanthemum, and Hawthorn. The “Garden” pattern was perhaps the most popular and was more commonly referred to as the “Open Window” design. It was popular enough that at least one other company copied it. The bodies of the Decalomania pieces were produced in either creamy ivory or snow white. Particularly elegant are the hexagonal shaped handled pitchers with lid. They came in two sizes: 3-3/4 pints and ¾ pints.

The authentic Coors Thermo-Porcelain items are marked, usually on the bottom of the piece and under the glaze, with “COORS THERMO PORCELAIN”. Many of the Rose Bud pieces are unmarked but even though the bold colors can sometimes be confused with the Fiesta dinnerware, the rose bud pattern in relief is pretty distinctive.
