City Council meets tonight at 6:30 in City Council Chambers. There are several red hot issues on tonight’s agenda.
They will hold a public hearing on the first set of changes to the municipal code. These changes are designed to pare back the mass, scale, and density of new construction. The current building moratorium was designed to give the city time to define appropriate language and put the changes into effect. If this topic is of concern to you, review the changes in tonight’s meeting packet. If you want to express an opinion, attend tonight’s meeting and plan to speak during the public comment period.
They will consider the mechanics of borrowing $24,500,000 to buy the Coors office building and property on 10th Street, east of Ford.
They will discuss how to use funds from a proposed lodging tax. At least two citizen groups have formed, hoping to lay claim to that money. One wants to support the City’s cultural organizations (museums, theater, symphony, etc.). The other wants to use the money to buy land, to be used for either open space or affordable housing. Now the City is proposing funneling the money into a “Visitor Improvement and Impact Program.” This would allow the city to control the money, and use it to “fund projects and programs to lessen or mitigate the impact of visitors to the community on community infrastructure, environmental resources, and cultural, community, and social resources in order to benefit the entire community and enhance the visitor experience” and to “fund projects and programs specifically intended to enhance local infrastructure and the above resources for the direct benefit of both the year round population and visitors.”
Finally, they will consider a recommendation from the committee that has been considering the fate of the Astor House.
