Join us on Indigenous Peoples’ Day to explore the fluidity of place as Indigenous writers demonstrate the survival and flourishing of their communities through literature. This presentation is based on Dr. Paula Farca’s book, Identity in Place: Contemporary Indigenous Fiction by Women Writers in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand (2011). Dr. Farca will focus on how Indigenous peoples survive in a postcolonial world, heal, regain homes and rituals, and subsequently build new homes and create new traditions. 6:30PM GURA Board Meeting
GURA will discuss the Heart of Golden project, their 2021/2022 budget, the Legacy Task Fund, their current year budget, the status of infrastructure projects, and pending land use cases in the URA areas. Staff will update them on the following:
• The Jefferson Board of County Commissioners approved the agreement to move forward with the Heritage Square land exchange proposal on September 15, 2020. The county zoning process for the land that may be added to the quarry will likely take about a year
• The Jefferson County Housing Authority has submitted the building permit for the housing project at 24th Street between Ford and Jackson Streets. Demolition of the existing buildings should commence soon.
• The building permit has been submitted for the large mixed-use (commercial boarding house) proposal at Gateway Village. GURA’s 2023 revenues will depend, in part, on the level of completion by the end of 2021. A ground breaking is scheduled for October 15th.
• The two multi-family buildings in the Basecamp project on 8th Street will have final occupancy permits soon. The completion date for the hotel is likely early 2021. These projects will affect GURA increment revenues for 2022 and beyond.

Golden History Moment
The October 11, 1860 Western Mountaineer (the predecessor to the Transcript) reported on doings in town and in the territory. The Territorial Legislature was meeting here in Golden. “…it has been characterized by a good deal of confusion and discord.” The article, “Belligerent Delegates,” provided a brief account of a fist fight between two of the legislators–a doctor and a judge.
A lengthy article discussed “the terribly revolting murder of poor Gantz.” A separate piece provided a homily on intoxicating drink, which was considered the cause of the murder. A third article described his execution in detail, and a fourth provided the hanged man’s last words.
The paper went on to describe a “Lynching on the Plains,” “Indian Hostilities” in Wyoming, a “Shooting Affray” here in Golden, an epidemic of typhoid Fever, and the “mobbing and execution of some seven or eight men for horse stealing and other crimes” in Denver.
There is a popular phrase in the news business: “If it bleeds, it leads.” In other words–violent, lurid stories make for a popular paper. In 1860, here in the Territory, “violent and lurid” was everyday life.
Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts as well as the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
