Brickyard House Surplus Property
Golden Landmarks Association has been hoping to get this property refurbished, but has not been able to find enough grant funding to cover the cost. The city plans to release an RFP to look for new possibilities.

Lubahn Trail Area Permit Parking
The homeowners at the base of the Lubahn Trail are overwhelmed with hikers parking on their street (and in front of their driveways) and leaving trash. They are requesting a parking permit system. The memo says, “Staff asked MTAB and they strongly came down on providing as much access as possible. They recommended that we not restrict parking in the area because the trails are part of Jefferson County Open Space, and we should not restrict use.” I have been unable to find that discussion in the recorded MTAB meetings.

2022 Operating Budget
They will hold a public hearing on the 2022 Operating Budget. The most significant change since the last budget review, on October 28th, is the addition of more firefighters. The community has become increasingly concerned about under-staffing in the fire department. The proposed change in the budget calls for the addition of 3 lieutenants and 4 firefighters. This would allow the department to staff Station 24 in Heritage Dells 24/7, as the main fire station is now. The positions would not be filled until mid-year. That half year would cost $488K.

As a reminder, the proposed 2022 budget already included plans to hire seven new employees (Right-of-Way Inspector, Fiber Administrator, Associate Planner, part time Economic Development Assistant, Co-Responder, Social Media & Marketing Coordinator, Affordable Housing Policy Coordinator, and Homeless Navigator). These last two jobs have already been filled, and the Right of Way Inspector is currently posted.

Strategic Action Plan Progress Report

Clear Creek Management
Councilors Brown and Fisher propose to form a Council Subcommittee to work through issues regarding overcrowding along the Clear Creek Corridor.

Golden History Moment

Ad for the grand opening of the Spudnut shop – Colorado Transcript – July 9, 1953

After hours of exhaustive research, an all-encompassing quantitative analysis, and a conference with some of the Rocky Mountains’ more notable culinary experts, this humble seeker of the truth has positively established that a Spudnut is not a doughnut. The Oredigger – November 9, 1954

Spudnuts were sweet, deep-fried pastries made of potato flour. They were sold at 805 13th Street (map) from 1953 until 1984. Long-time Golden residents still wax rhapsodic about them.

The Oredigger article emphasized their popularity with Mines students, and quoted the owner as saying that his busiest times were during finals weeks. It was a good place to load up on coffee as well as sugar: the store was open from 5AM to midnight.
