HPB and a COP for an ADU, plus the Astor House

Astor House Hotel Museum - Golden Colorado

6:30PM The Historic Preservation Board meets tonight in City Council Chambers. They will review a request for a “Certificate of Appropriateness” (COP) for an Accessory Dwelling Unit to be built behind 2007 East Street (map). The owners plan to replace their existing 1 car garage with a new 2 car garage. The new building will have an apartment on the second floor and a basement below with an office and a full bathroom. The new structure will face the alley behind the house. The Board will then review a draft application for Local Historic Landmark Designation for the Astor House. See the meeting packet for more information….

It’s always interesting to see what my readers will react to. Last month, I began writing about parking problems 100 years ago. I became hooked on the subject and wound up writing a 4-part series describing the various means we’ve used to cope with parking problems for the last century. Somewhat to my surprise, people loved that series, so I’ve added it to my collection of random history articles.

Within the parking series, I mentioned that in 1971, the Astor House was slated to be demolished to make way for a parking lot: “For some Golden residents, that was the last straw. In the past few years, we had lost the Courthouse, South School, North School, several churches, and many old houses. People didn’t think that trading the Astor House for 8 parking spaces was worth it. What followed was an amazing display of grassroots advocacy (worthy of another post on another day), and in 1972, the citizens of Golden voted to have the City purchase and preserve the building. “

My friend Gene Child, who was one of the volunteers who helped save the Astor House, loaned me his copy of the book his late wife (Arlone Child) wrote about that effort, and gave me permission to scan it and post it online. Enjoy reading Golden Landmarks Association: The First Twenty Years – 1972-1992.
