How to Get a Flat, MTAB, PRAM, Golden Cases, and Thanksgiving at the Holiday Inn

The photo above shows the new apartment complex on 24th Street between Ford and Jackson (map). Here’s some information for those of you who might want to get in there. First, it’s affordable housing–owned by Foothills Regional Housing–so you have to be income-qualified. It is rental housing, not for sale. FRH hopes they will start accepting applications in January, but that’s subject to some construction/finishing materials that they’re waiting for.

In order to be notified as soon as they begin accepting applications, you should sign up for their “Interest List” right now. Visit this page, scroll down, and complete the sign-up form.

I’ve asked the City of Golden’s new Affordable Housing Policy Coordinator, Janet Maccubbin, how Golden residents and those who work here can get top priority on those units, and here’s what she said:

FRH is providing a priority for households currently living or working in Golden.  Below is how that priority should work.

As far as ongoing leasing goes, it will be on a first-come-first-serve basis, which means a unit will not be committed to any applicant until a complete application and required forms are submitted, along with the application fees/deposits are paid in full.  In that case, if several households all applied for one unit, the household currently living or working in Golden would have priority for the unit.

Because of federal funding rules which put a tight time limit on lease up, at initial occupancy, the units will be filled based on the household which can move in the soonest.  If three households submit completed applications for the same unit and all three can occupy the unit immediately, then the Golden household would receive the priority.  However, if the Golden household could not move in for 2 months, then the unit could go to someone who could move in immediately from broader Jefferson County.

MTAB will review a memo to Council (not included) recommending that Golden adopt the Colorado Safety Stop. The board discussed this last month and learned that the state has left it up to local communities as to whether to permit the Safety Stop. Communities have been hesitant to be the first, so Golden may be at forefront of adopting this rule. They will discuss the Transportation Master Plan and which projects should be prioritized in 2022. Most of the work will focus on south Golden next year.

7PM Parks, Recreation and Museums Advisory Board Meeting @ City Hall
PRAM will discuss City Council’s recent decision to have a standing Clear Creek Management committee. They will discuss making improvements to trail entry signs, review the Open Space Master Plan, and hear an update on DeLong Park Construction.

COVID Update

This week’s update, which I published on Tuesday, was missing the Golden stats. They’ve now updated them, so here they are:

Known Cases in Golden – Nov 8th: 2,562 | Nov 15th: 2,631 (+69)

Golden History Moment

Golden Transcript – November 18, 1980

The November 18, 1980 Golden Transcript included this ad for the Thanksgiving buffet at the Holiday Inn (only $6.95!). This hardly seems like history, but it occurs to me that many current residents never saw it and don’t know where it was.

The Holiday Inn was built at Colfax and Indiana (map) in 1964, opening in 1965. It was planned as part of a much larger development scheme that included a new shopping center. The “Wide Acres Center” was to have a major dry goods store, supermarkets, services businesses, retail outlets, a home center, automotive and recreation center.

The shopping components took much longer than anticipated. The Denver West stores (north side of Colfax) opened in 1999 and Colorado Mills Mall (south side of Colfax) opened in 2002.

When it opened, the Holiday Inn had an outdoor swimming pool, restaurant, and cocktail lounge. According to the company’s website, the Holiday Inn chain was relatively new at that time (having been founded in 1952), but was growing quickly. By 1965, there were 500 Holiday Inn motels in North America.

The chain began enclosing their swimming pools and introducing Holidomes (glassed-covered areas with pools, plants, and miniature golf) in the 1970s, and the Golden Holiday Inn got one too. This enhanced their appeal as a year-round destination for families.

Holiday Inn in 2007

I can’t remember precisely when “our” Holiday Inn closed, but in the oldest available Google Street View image (2007), it looks recently closed. There’s a chain link fence blocking the main entrance, but the sign is still up.

Empire Nissan now occupies that space.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
