Coors Classic bike race – July 14, 1983 – enlarge

The July 14, 1983 Colorado Transcript showed the Coors International Bicycle Classic leaving Golden, en route to Vail. According to Wikipedia, this race was repeated in the years from 1980-1988.

The event inspired a 1985 movie, starring Kevin Costner, about a bicycle race set in Colorado. American Flyers features a few seconds of footage showing the riders zipping through downtown Golden.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
