This will be a scorching week, with highs in the mid-90s. My house was built in the mid-1950s. At that time, the accepted wisdom was that you didn’t need air conditioning in Colorado, so our house was built without it. I have a window air conditioner in my office. Since I’m a bit of an energy miser, I only use it about 5 days a year. For the most part, I get along fine with fans. I just bought a nice one from Meyer Hardware ( 1103 Arapahoe – Map) that fits in a window and brings in all the 60 degree air at night (“free cold air!” as my husband puts it). So let this serve as a reminder of the transformative power of fans–they keep you cool while using much less power than air conditioners. Meyer’s has a fine selection, including small personal fans, tower-style fans for small spaces, window, pedestal, and wall fans.

Leadership Golden is holding a meet and greet from 5-7PM at the Old Capitol Grill and Smokehouse. Alumni are invited, as are individuals who want to learn more about the program. There will be free appetizers and a cash bar. Feel free to bring a friend or colleague! For more information and/or to apply, visit www.leadershipgolden.org.
6PM – The Arthur Lakes Library at the Colorado School of Mines is offering a free program tonight about Historic Mining Maps. One of the driving motivations of U.S. settlement of the Rocky Mountains was mining. Beginning in the late 1850s, valuable minerals attracted fortune seekers to Colorado. As government organizations helped settle the lawlessness of mining districts, it was necessary to accurately map who had rights to plots of land. Maps painted a picture of mining’s booms and busts, noted prospectors’ names, and showed the development of Colorado’s famous mountain towns. Some of the original maps are works of art. This talk will illustrate Colorado’s historical mining maps using the rich collection of the Arthur Lakes Library. 1400 Illinois Street (map)
7PM – The Parks, Recreation, and Museums Advisory Board will meet tonight in City Council Chambers. They will begin discussing their capital priorities for next year’s budget. The minutes from last month’s meeting explain some unknowns arising from the possible move to the Coors office building. That would likely inspire a new look at the Clear Creek Master Plan to see which elements would move up in priority. For now, the Parks Department is looking for places for pickle ball courts. The sport requires a hard surface and is apparently noisy, so they wouldn’t want to reuse a tennis court (too soft) or put the facilities too near a residential neighborhood. A new citizens group has formed to protect the Open Space areas within the City boundaries. This group spoke to the board last month about some of their ideas, which include doing an inventory of the spaces. The Board will discuss a tour and/or study session about our Open Space, which may take place in September. The Department has budgeted money this year for design work on the new Delong Park (on 23rd Street), so the board will discuss that process tonight. More info….
