Holiday Shopping & Entertainment

First things first: yesterday, I reported that the “Shop the Fringes” event would be happening today. It’s actually tomorrow, on Small Business Saturday. Sorry!

Are you confused by all these specialized shopping days? Here’s the run-down:
Black Friday – the Friday after Thanksgiving is traditionally the biggest shopping day of the year. In recent years, stores have been offering certain items at loss-leader prices. This is particularly true of chains and big box stores, though some smaller stores participate as well.
Small Business Saturday – this was developed in reaction to Black Friday. Small, locally-owned businesses encourage people to patronize local businesses. They offer sale prices and other inducements to visit, such as refreshments, free gift wrap, etc. They also emphasize the importance of spending money with local businesses because those businesses are far more likely to support local causes.
Museum Store Sunday – on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, museum stores remind us they carry really cool, unique merchandise that we’re unlikely to find in “regular” stores. Purchases in these shops also support the museums’ operations.
Cyber Monday – web-based retailers do their big promotions on the Monday after Thanksgiving. For many years, people shopped online because they were able to avoid paying sales tax on those purchases. That loophole has mostly closed, especially with the biggest retailers, like Amazon.
