The December 15, 1969 Golden Transcript described a fire at the Frontier gas station at 10th and Washington. A State Highway Department employee had filled his tank at the station but forgotten to remove the nozzle before driving away.

The hose was pulled from the pump and gas washed across the pavement. Sparks ignited the gasoline. The fire department responded quickly, with 29 men on site, but not before the pumps and canopy were destroyed.

The gas station had been there since 1952 Prior to that time, there was a blacksmith shop on that corner.

The City bought the property in 1975. The Golden Visitors Center was built there in 1997.
