The December 27, 1974 Golden Transcript announced the purchase of a 3,000 acre former cattle ranch from Mrs. Anna Lee White. Mrs. White and her late husband Paul had raised 4 children and Hereford cattle on the ranch. Paul had purchased the property in 1913.

Developers had planned to buy the property for residential development, but they defaulted on their contract with the White family. When the County purchased the land, it was appraised at $2,017,200. Mrs. white sold it for use as open space for only $857,104. She wanted it to be a memorial to her late husband.

White Ranch Open Space is 5 miles north of Golden. It offers 20 miles of trails and 2 campgrounds.

Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
