The July 23, 1973 Golden Transcript included photos of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church being demolished. The church had been built in 1903. It stood at 14th and East Street, a spot now occupied by the Coors tour parking lot.

The Transcript published similar photos when the First Baptist church at 12th and Jackson was demolished in 1961 and the Methodist church at 14th and Washington came down in 1963.

Other downtown churches were razed without Transcript documentation. The Church of the Nazarene was located on Washington Avenue, west side, just north of Clear Creek. It was demolished in 1959. There was also a Christian Church, which was purchased by the Seventh Day Adventist congregation before being torn down to make way for the 1924 Golden High School. It was located at 10th and Jackson.

Two of Golden’s pioneer-era church buildings still stand. The Presbyterian church at 15th and Washington is now Foothills Art Center. Calvary Church at 13th and Arapahoe still serves its original purpose.
