Golden History Moment
For many years–starting in the early 1870s and running until about 1940–the Golden Fire Department gave a Thanksgiving Dance. It was not only a social event, but a fund-raiser for the department.
On Thursday evening, November 30, the fifth annual ball of the Excelsior Fire and Hose Company will be given in Standley Hall…. All friends of the company, and every good citizen of Jefferson county, will be cordially welcomed. It is not to be presumed, however, that unpleasant or improper people will be admitted to the hall…. One of the best bands in the state will be in attendance.

The venues changed over the years, the Golden Opera House being the most popular. Music and dance styles evolved too.
The regular Thanksgiving dance of the Golden fire department was held at the opera house last night and was danced until a late hour this morning. George Morrison and his famous orchestra furnished the music.

George Morrison played for many Golden events over many years, and was a regular at the Rock Rest Lodge.
George is a talented violinist and the members of his group are equally fine, as well as being extremely versatile. Their toe-tapping tunes range from bop to Strauss waltzes, with polkas and you-name-it on request. Everyone from teens to grandma and grandpa who enjoy good music plan to come!
