Golden History Moment

63 Years Ago
January 1, 1959 marked the beginning of Golden’s centennial year–the anniversary of the gold rush. Through the first half of the year, the Transcript published a number of articles about Golden history, with emphasis on the pioneer era.

The wave of nostalgia culminated in a parade on June 13th. According to the June 18, 1959 Transcript, thousands watched the parade, which included 600 horses and an estimated thousand people riding floats. The highlight was a covered wagon drawn by a yoke of three oxen–which is how many of Golden’s first settlers arrived.

Golden was not noted for nostalgia during this era–in fact, it was busily demolishing our pioneer-era buildings to make room for parking lots. As soon as the June parade was over, the focus returned to “what’s next?” That fall, citizens voted to build a new municipal center on 10th Street, which included police and fire department accommodations, offices for city employees, a room for the Golden library, room for the Golden Pioneer Museum, a recreation building, and a municipal swimming pool.
