GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
I recently came across this picture of an “electric car” (as they called the streetcars back in the day) parked at 13th and Washington. I decided to play “Date That Photo!”
I’m not much of an antique car expert, but I would have guessed 1920s or early ’30s for the automobile. The stone building with the sign that says “GARAGE” was demolished in 1948 to make way for an extension of the Golden Gem Theater. The woman’s hemline looks like ’40s or later.
Then I noticed the advertising sign on the front of the car. I could read “GOLDEN PIONEER DAYS” easily enough, and when I zoomed in I could also read “AUG 15-16-17.” I searched the online Transcripts for the phrase “GOLDEN PIONEER DAYS” and learned that they only used that phrase in one year–1940.
Easiest game ever!
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
