Golden History Moment

I began posting COVID stats in April of 2020. At that time, Jefferson County was posting new stats seven days a week. They later went to posting Monday through Friday. The rate of new cases has now slowed enough that the County has shifted to posting once a week.

I thought this would be a good time to show the cases, specifically in Golden, over the past year. That dip in June of 2020 happened when the County changed the definition of “Golden.” Initially, they were including every Golden mailing address, which includes many residents in the mountains, Pleasant View, and other unincorporated Jeffco addresses. In June, they refined the results by town or neighborhood, so they were able to report on the number of cases within the city limits of Golden.

Since I’m posting on the 22nd of the month, I looked backward and counted new cases from the 22nd of each month to the 22nd of the next. When there were no new stat on the 22nd (for instance, when it fell on the weekend), I looked at the closest date.

Here’s an overview of what was happening in Golden last June:

On June 1st of last year, there had been 2,636 cases of Coronavirus in Jefferson County, and 172 deaths.

We were all trying to figure out how to operate through a pandemic. The playgrounds re-opened at the beginning of June, as did Foothills Art Center.

City Council was trying to decide how to handle the public health crisis. Should they require masks, or was it enough to recommend them? Would it hurt our businesses or help them to have a mask mandate? Should we try to minimize the crowds who visit the creek?

Emotions were running high in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, and people wanted to attend a vigil in Parfet Park. Should the City make any effort to stop it, since we weren’t supposed to have large gatherings? (We didn’t, and people did make some effort to preserve social distance.)

Golden businesses were trying to stay afloat amid mask uncertainties, social distancing guidelines, and general fear of leaving the house. The City tried closing Washington Avenue to help attract customers, but decided it didn’t make a significant difference.

The History Museum and Quilt Museum both began offering free online lectures. Foothills Art Center offered painting classes by Zoom.
