GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

Black and white photo of Golden with several landmarks circled and numbered
Postcard showing Golden from the vantage point of Lookout Mountain – enlarge

I collect old postcards of Golden, and this is my latest acquisition. You know what that means: it’s time for another episode of DATE THAT PHOTO!

The goal of this game is to identify the earliest possible date and the latest possible date that the photo could have been taken.

The goal of this game is to identify landmarks appearing in (or in some cases missing from) the photo and use the known dates of those landmarks to identify the range of dates when that scene was possible. So here we go….

These buildings appear in the photo.

1 Baptist Church (built in 1863)
2 South School (1873)
3 North School (1880)
4 Catholic Church (1899)
5 CSM-RI (1912)
6 GHS/GJH/AMC (1924)
7 Central School (1936)
8 Steinhauer Field House (1937)

The youngest of those buildings was constructed in 1937, so we know the photo was taken in 1937 or later.

Next, we look for landmarks that exist today but don’t appear in the photo. This includes:

9 Highway 58 (built in 1970)
10 City Hall (built in 1962)
11 Water Treatment Plan (built in 1953)
12 Hested’s Department Store (built in 1957)
13 Post Office (1941)

The earliest of the missing landmarks is the downtown post office, which was built in 1941. This means that the photo was taken before the post office was built in 1941.

So I think the photo was taken between 1937 and 1941. If you see anything that narrows the range, let me know!
