Golden History Moment

1959 Centennial Parade – photo courtesy of Donna Plummer

Golden celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1959, and the June 18th, 1959 Colorado Transcript reported on the success of the event. It said that thousands of people thronged the streets of Golden.

The event kicked off on Friday night, when Charles Ryland and RIchard Ronzio gave a talk and slide show covering Golden’s first 100 years.

There was a big parade on Saturday, with the theme One Hundred Years of Progress, showing the advances Golden had made since 1859. The parade included “about six hundred horses, floats carrying an estimated one thousand persons, a colorful pageant depicting the early days of Golden, several bands and musical groups, and many antique autos as well as a ‘jeep’ patrol.”

Lu Holland (owner of the Holland House Hotel–now the Table Mountain Inn) brought a yoke of oxen to the parade, and Pete Morrison drove them. The Jaycees sponsored a street dance, which brought a large crowd downtown. The merchants had decorated their store windows with centennial-related displays.

There was a gunslinging contest where participants were judged by speed and accuracy. The first four prizes were guns, and the next six winners received cash prizes.

The celebration was capped with a gymkhana (equestrian skill contest) on Sunday on “the old Rodeo Grounds on South Table Mountain.”

Author’s Note: My interest in Golden history went from “casual” to “serious” when I was asked to do a slideshow of Golden history for Golden’s 150th anniversary! They showed it on a giant screen in Lions Park. I think they’re still showing that slideshow on the TV at Cafe 13. I also took a video of the parade for that event, which you can see on YouTube!

The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the historic issues. You’ll find old Transcripts online at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org.
