We’ve all been wondering what would happen to the Meyer Hardware building. There were several interested parties, but the Schaeffer family has chosen to sell it to Miners Alley Playhouse. I’m so excited about this–I loved Meyer Hardware and I love Miners Alley Playhouse. Now the theater will have a home of its own. Learn more….

Toys for Tots Tomorrow!
Tomorrow, 10:30AM-2:30PM US Marine Corps Memorial, 16899 W. Colfax Avenue, Golden, CO (map)
The United States Marine Corps Memorial annual ceremony for Veterans’ Day (2-3PM tomorrow) has been expanded this year to help Toys for Tots. A truck will be at the ceremony to collect toys. More information
Toys for Tots began in 1947 as the brain child of Marine Corps Reserve Major Bill Hendricks. Actually it was his wife, Diane, who was the real inspiration. She had a few handcrafted dolls and asked Bill to deliver them to an agency that supports children in need.
When Bill reported back to his wife that he could not find such an organization, she instructed him to “start one!”. Maj Hendricks and the Marines in his reserve unit in LA collected and distributed 5,000 toys in 1947.
Seeing such successful community engagement in 1947, the Commandant directed all Marine Reserve Sites to implement a TFT campaign transforming it into a national community action program in 1948. Learn more….
Golden History Moment
In the fall of 1959, the Chamber of Commerce was spearheading an effort to build a new municipal center. It would include city offices, police and fire departments, council chambers, an office for the chamber of commerce, a library, the history museum, a recreation center, and an outdoor swimming pool. Supporters were hoping that the voters would approve a $350,000 bond issue on November 3rd. The November 5, 1959 Colorado Transcript announced that the voters had said “YES,” and a new Municipal Center was in our future.
Council went through several iterations of the plans–scaling back when the initial “dream center” far exceeded the budget. The outdoor swimming pool opened first, in June of 1960. The “main” building–police, fire, and city offices–opened in May of 1961.
Dedication of Golden’s new Municipal Center probably will stand as the greatest triumph in Golden’s Second Century…many other wonderful things will happen in the next 98 years but never again will the fulfillment of a dream become so true as it did last Saturday–“comparing old city hall to these new quarters is like comparing a Model T Ford to a Cadillac” once observer said.
