Transcript founder George liked the occasional drink; in fact, he was famous for side-stepping promises he made to his wife to avoid drinking.
We had promised...to refrain from drinking any of that Leadville whiskey. ...We evaded that promise by mixing the stuff [whiskey] with crackers and eating it with a spoon.

With that reputation in mind, I enjoyed his prim remarks about how people in Denver celebrated Christmas.
Christmas, as you well know, is a gala day in Denver. You also know that notwithstanding the moral depravity of the place, its observance of the “outer rites” are noticeable in the extreme.
Our churches in the morning were duly crowded and the Lord’s services went forward with commendable zeal, yet it is my duty to record that the devil was served with equal zeal…there were not less than two thousand men drunk in Denver that night.
