A REQUEST FROM ROTARY
GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
The June 25, 1873 Colorado Transcript reported that a contract to build Golden’s new school had gone to Robert Millikin and H. M. Root. “We are fully assured that the work will be first-class, and we can soon boast of as handsome a school-house as is in the territory.”
The builders set to work at once, and the school opened the following fall. Golden’s denizens were rightfully proud of their new school. With the primary school children on the first floor and more advanced students on the second, it was deemed to be the first “high school” in the territory.
The new school was so appealing that it immediately drew more students than had been anticipated. The November 12, 1873 Transcript reported that
When the plans for the present handsome and commodious school-building were drawn up, the average attendance of pupils did not exceed 95, and there were only 196 children of school age in the entire district. This was in 1872. Now, however, the number of children enrolled is exactly 400, and there are said to be many more whom the assessor overlooked or neglected. The regular attendance at the new school-house is now 237, while the seating capacity of the whole house is but 219, thus giving a present surplus attendance of eighteen.
To alleviate the overcrowding, the school board decided that half of the primary school children would attend in the morning and half in the afternoon. The Transcript suggested that the starting age be raised from five years old to six.
The overcrowding continued, and in 1880, a second school was built for some of the younger children. The new school was located on the north side of Clear Creek, so the two schools were called “North School” and “South School.”
Both pioneer-era schools were eventually replaced. A new high school was built at 10th and Washington in 1924 (now the American Mountaineering Center) and a new elementary school was built at 12th and Jackson in 1936. The North and South School buildings were both demolished in 1965.
Golden High School is celebrating their 150th anniversary this afternoon from 1-4PM!
