Golden History Moment
The October 1, 1942 Colorado Transcript detailed yet another Castle Rock mishap.
For the first time in the history of Golden’s Castle Rock a man, Pvt. William Foster, slipped over the edge Sunday and would have lost his life had he not fortunately secured a hold with both of his hands on a narrow ledge of rock, seven feet below the brink, from which he hung suspended in midair for 45 minutes….
That may have been the first time someone hung from the edge, but it was certainly not the first time someone had gone over the edge–or the last. In 1908, a hiker swooned and fell over the edge (but lived). In 1925, a visitor to the old dance hall lost his bearings in the dark and stepped over the edge (and died). In 1943–a year after today’s story–a young thug pushed two little boys over the edge, killing them.
In 1942, Private William Foster, visiting from his post at Fitzsimmons Hospital, spent the day hiking on South Table Mountain. At about 6:30PM he was standing at the edge of Castle Rock when his foot slipped. He went over the edge but was able to grab an outcropping about 7 feet from the summit. He yelled for help, catching the attention of two women below. They sent two men to his aid. After hanging for 45 minutes, he was pulled to safety. Upon reaching firm ground, he told his rescuers that he felt like he was in heaven.
The rescue occurred on the South side of Castle Rock at a point where, had Foster lost his grip, he would have plunged some 70 to 100 feet to certain death on the rocks below.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
