Golden History Moment
57 Years (and two days) Ago
The September 16, 1965 Colorado Transcript announced that the historic Pullman home (map) was being demolished.
A building which is surely the oldest in the Pleasant View area is being demolished by the present owners, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brown.
The two story building, located at 15950 S. Golden Road, was built in 1849 as a ranch house on the Cold Springs Ranch, which has also been known as the Mott Johnson Ranch. During 1859 and 1860 it served as a stage coach stop, the first stop for stages carrying visitors, gold seekers and the curious to the fabled Gregory Diggings toward Central City.
For many years the structure was called the “Pullman House…”
Colorado Transcript – September 16, 1965
George M. Pullman, who went on to fame and immense wealth building railroad cars, lived at that ranch during the gold rush years. The building was used as a ranch house for many years, and later served as a filling station and then a hardware store. The original structure was built of logs, which were later covered by painted wood siding.
The Colorado Railroad Museum currently has an exhibit about the Pullman company: Wheels of Mis/Fortune: Pullman’s Legacy of Innovation, Idealism and Exploitation.
Here’s your chance to learn about this Colorado Connection, along with lots more to help stimulate your interest in one of America’s best-known but perhaps least-understood railroad personalities and the company he founded!
Featuring original objects, photographs and more, the new exhibit traces this storied company and its founder (George M. Pullman) through good and bad, from its 19th century inception to its 1980s ending. The exhibit examines the subject from several viewpoints, highlighting the company’s many innovations along with aspects such as its founder’s idealistic but sometimes oppressive treatment of workers—including Pullman’s African American workers, and the Civil Rights legacy which resulted.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
