City News
The Arch for Graduates
The City has put a banner under the arch that celebrates the 2020 graduates. Since they can’t have a graduation, they can at least get a memorable photo standing under the arch.
City Expenses
Every quarter, the City posts a list of almost every expenditure they make. It’s a non-searchable/sortable PDF, so it’s a bit hard to read, but I always find some interesting items. The 1st Quarter 2020 list is here. To get more information about any of the expenses, contact Finance Director Jeff Hansen.
Astor House
You may recall that last year, the City was looking seriously at selling the Astor House. They encountered a lot of public dismay at the thought of selling it, so City Council asked the Historic Preservation Board and Golden Landmarks to do some research into what the community wants them to do with it.
The group that has been working on that task did a survey, asking for the community’s ideas. The first survey (which received 146 responses) was wide open, asking people for their preferences without regard to practicalities such as budget or ownership–just asking what people want. There will be at least one, possibly two more surveys to help narrow down the possibilities.
To see what the community wants to do with the Astor House, view the survey results at AstorHouse.org.
Golden History Moment
One of my favorite pastimes is looking at old photos at very high resolution. Patrick Klein was kind enough to send me some photos that he has been taking from elevations–either standing on the mountains or using his drone. I like comparing the top photo, which is from the Denver Public Library Western History Collection, to the bottom one. A lot has changed in downtown Golden, but you should be able to spot at least two anchor points in each–the Old Capitol Grill and the Astor House. Try it!
