New COVID Information
Golden Deaths
Jefferson County Public Health publishes the new COVID stats every Monday. Among the stats they provide are the number of deaths in Jefferson County and the number of cases in Golden. This week, I asked them how many of the deaths occurred in Golden
As of last Monday (November 8th), there had been 1,004 deaths in Jefferson County. 92 of them have been Golden residents.
Booster Shots
The CDC has defined the eligible group as people over 65, those who are immunocompromised, etc. (see the full description of who’s eligible under federal guidelines).
Because Colorado is currently experiencing such high rates of infection, Colorado Governor Polis has approved everyone 18 or over who finished their initial MRNA (Pfizor and Moderna) shots 6 months ago or Johnson & Johnson shot 2 months ago. Learn more about Colorado eligibility….

Golden History Moment
The November 12, 1967 Colorado Transcript announced that Mrs. Carrie J. Critchfield had been elected as Golden’s first female City Council member. She represented Ward 4 (currently Bill Fisher’s area).
Carrie was born in Nevadaville in 1903 and moved to Golden with her family in 1911. Her father worked as a watchman at the Coors’ family home. She sometimes babysat Bill and Joe Coors, and began working part time at the brewery at the age of 13. She attended the Golden schools, with particularly fond memories of teacher Gertrude Bell. After graduating from Golden High School, she attended Barnes Business College, then returned to a job at Coors Porcelain. She was Coors’ first salaried female employee.
She married in 1923 and divorced in 1948, “on grounds of extreme and repeated acts of cruelty.”
She reached the position of “Assistant Office Manager and Cashier” at the the porcelain plant, and retired with 47 years of service. She held many leadership positions in the community, including the Board of Trustees at the Methodist Church, Matron with Eastern Star, President of the Business and Professional Woman, and Woman of the Year at the Colorado State Federation of Business and Professional Women.
After retirement, she traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe with various lady friends from Coors. In the essay she contributed to A Woman’s Life in Golden, she wrote
In my lifetime I have enjoyed all kinds of transportation. Travel as a child was by walking with friends to visit in Russell Gulch and Blackhawk and by Colorado and Southern Railroad to Golden. Sunday afternoon rides were by horse and buggy, and then came our 1922 Ford sedan with fancy, sheer curtains on the side windows. This car couldn’t make some of the grades so we had to back up, even on 44th Avenue. With nearly everyone else in Golden, I used the interurban street car to go to Denver.

A 1983 Golden Transcript article wrote about her service on Council:
Today, she remembers that time as simple and non-controversial. Her biggest concern as a councilwoman, she recalls, was fighting to secure ambulance service for the city. Now, she admits, the world seems to be more complicated, and she doesn’t envy Golden’s modern leaders who have to try to maintain Golden’s small-town atmosphere and at the same time encourage growth. …she still attends council meetings when an issue demands her attention.
Golden Transcript – September 22, 1983
Mrs. Critchfield died in 1995 and is buried in the Golden Cemetery.
