We are nearing the end of our month-long Go Golden Fitness celebration. Mayor Sloan is leading a walk starting at Higher Grounds (803 14th St.) at 7:30 this morning, and Councilor Claxton leads a walk starting from the new Starbucks (17224 S. Golden Road) tomorrow morning at 7:30. The monthly Golden bike cruise is tonight at 6:30.
The culmination of this month-long health extravaganza will be Mayor Sloan’s annual awards presentation to outstanding Golden citizens. The keynote speaker at the event will be Mick Cornett, the Mayor of Oklahoma City. Mr. Cornett’s list of awards includes nods for urban design, health, sports and the arts. Newsweek called him one of the five most innovative mayors in the country. London-based World Mayors listed him as the No. 2 mayor in the world and Governing magazine named him the Public Official of the Year. Mayor Cornett speaks nationally on the topics of healthy communities, urban design, walkable cities and placemaking – all topics close to the heart of Golden’s people.
Plan to be at the Mountaineering Center at 6:30 Thursday night to hear what Mick Cornett has to say, and to celebrate the outstanding Golden-ites who are receiving Mayor’s Awards this year.
The dress-up theme for tonight’s Golden Cruise is “pirates,” so dig out your eye patch and be at the parking lot at 10th & Illinois at 6:30.
