Golden History Moment
The April 5, 1979 Colorado Transcript announced the dedication of Colorado School of Mines’ Arthur Lakes Library. The Library was 25 years old by that time, but it had recently undergone a major expansion, which nearly doubled its size (from 36,000 to 70,000 square feet). The School’s enrollment was growing, and the library needed room for more patrons and more books.
When the Mines library opened in 1954, the school had 940 students and the library had approximately 70,000 books.
Five years later, when the library was officially named after Arthur Lakes, the enrollment was 1,076 and the collection included 90,000 books.
By 1979, when the building was expanded, there were 2,646 students and more than 200,000 books.
The School of Mines currently has 6,522 students. These days, the library is increasingly digitized. This saves space and makes the information available from remote locations. The library’s “By the Numbers” page reports that they currently have 720,683 E-books, 215,230 E-Journals, and 105,999 print books.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
