The Friends of the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum’s “First Thursday” lecture series will continue in April on the SECOND Thursday. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Joseph R. Smyth, Mineralogist and Mineral Physicist in the Department of Geological Sciences, University of Colorado-Boulder. Dr. Smyth’s talk is titled: “Mineralogy of the Earth’s Interior.”  The Earth’s interior is divided into crust, mantle, and core. The core has a liquid metal outer core and a solid metal inner core and comprises about one third of the mass. The mantle is about 2900 km of solid, silicate rock (minerals) and comprises about two thirds of the mass.
