The weather is just now most beautiful in this region; the days are clear and balmy and the nights are most delightfully cool and pleasant. Was ever a country so favored in this respect as is our beautiful Colorado?

6:30PM Planning Commission Meeting @ City Hall
The Planning Commission will discuss which bike and pedestrian projects to recommend for funding next year. The possibilities include Arapahoe Street downtown, where the City plans to remove parking spaces in favor of a wider sidewalk. Bike lanes along Zeta Street and West 4th Avenue are also a possibility, as are bike lanes along W. 10th Avenue and Jefferson County Parkway. A sidewalk from the Golden Terrace community would significantly improve access from that neighborhood to “the core of Golden.” A sidewalk connecting Corporate Center to US6 would provide a safe crossing of the exit ramp onto US 6th. The new Overlook project requires a paved trail. Bike lanes on Iowa Street would connect the Tucker Gulch Trail to the Hwy 93 trail. See tonight’s meeting packet for information and diagrams of all potential projects.

Golden History Moment
The October 6, 1910 Colorado Transcript reported a “Mysterious Escape from County Jail.” Frank Foster, accused of horse theft, escaped from the jail in the basement of the courthouse. The article stated that the prisoner must have had outside help from his gang members.
The previous year, the courthouse had replaced the coal-burning stoves located in individual offices with a steam heat system. The boiler was located in the basement, near the jail, and the noise from the boiler probably covered noise made by opening the locks.
The article stated that Foster was “an old time jail bird, and twelve or thirteen years ago escaped from the same jail under similar circumstances.” Sheriff A. W. Heater was offering a $50 reward for Foster’s capture.
The January 12, 1911 Transcript reported that Foster had been recaptured. The article may have been implying that Foster’s escape had cost Sheriff Heater the election: “As his last official act as county sheriff, A. W. Heater yesterday landed behind the bars Frank Foster, the alleged horse thief who mysteriously escaped from the county jail here just before election.” In January, Foster was spotted in Pueblo. Heater traveled there to retrieve him, “brought him to Golden and turned him over to Sheriff Dennis.”
