HPB will review a certificate of design review and a finding of compatibility for an addition to a detached garage, located at 1017 12th Street, a noncontributing structure within the 12th Street Historic District. The garage was built in 2009. The owners plan to build a second story with solar panels on the roof.
Golden History Moment
The March 7, 1940 Colorado Transcript announced that construction was beginning on Golden’s new post office. The contractor expected to employ 15-20 men, most of them local.
“…by the first of next year Postmaster A. M. Pike and his corps of mail experts will be serving Golden and trade territory from the new up-to-date building, equipped with all the latest furnishings and gadgets for quick and prompt mail service.”
The Golden Post Office was one of many buildings funded by the federal government during the Depression. The plan was to provide employment while improving our national infrastructure. Public art was incorporated into most federal projects. Golden’s post office included a mural depicting the building of the road into Clear Creek Canyon. The mural was installed in October of 1940.
The new post office opened for business in November of 1940.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
