GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
The June 24, 1982 Golden Transcript reported that Princess Anne of Great Britain had recently visited White Ranch Park, just north of Golden. Anne is a notable equestrienne, having competed in the 1976 Olympics, and when planning a trip to Colorado, she wanted to experience “a typical Western trail ride.” The Roundup Riders of the Rockies obliged, organizing a picnic lunch in White Ranch. The Princess had expressed interest in western horse breeds, so many of the horses used on the ride were paints and appaloosas. The food was carried on a pack mule named Clementine.
The Roundup Riders presented Anne with a Forest Service belt buckle and a western hat. They also gave her a letter inviting her husband to join them on their annual trail ride.
Princess Anne observed that while she couldn’t speak for her husband, she herself might accept the invitation. However, when reminded that Roundup Riders is strictly a men’s group, she suggested mischievously that in all things, someone has to be the first.
Today, a commemorative bench labeled “Princess Anne View” marks the spot where the group enjoyed the view of the plains.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
