Golden History Moment
The April 26, 1962 Colorado Transcript included this photo of the future “Science Hall.” When completed in the summer of 1964, it was dedicated to Dr. Paul Meyer. Dr. Meyer taught mathematics at the School of Mines from 1883-1900 and was a practicing physician in Golden. He was both brilliant and well-liked.
Dr. Meyer had an unusual combination of intellectual eminence and warmly human traits. Born in Switzerland in 1854, he was graduated from the University of Berne when only 13 years old, and earned his medical degree from the University of Heidelberg at the age of 18 and his Ph.D. at 20. He worked with Einstein on mathematical problems and was an international champion at chess. Once he declined a lavish commission to travel to England to solve a mechanical engineering problem, in order to avoid leaving his medical patients in Golden. (Colorado Transcript – 6/18/1964)
Meyer Hall served as the physics building until 2016, when it was demolished to make way for the CoorsTek Center for Applied Sciences and Engineering. The CoorsTek building opened in 2017. Here’s where Google Street View really comes in handy!
The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the historic issues. You’ll find old Transcripts online at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org.
