My apologies for yesterday’s jumbled email! You received my blank template, followed by the draft of today’s email, followed by the Sunday email. At least you know this isn’t generated by AI–I assume a computer wouldn’t exhibit such gaffes. I’m repeating Rich Lucken’s photo of flowers by the Golden City Brewery, because I thought it was exceptionally pretty and I wanted to make sure you saw it.

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT

Colorado Transcript Editor George West – in Union uniform and as a civilian – Golden History Museum collection

The July 3, 1867 Colorado Transcript found Editor George West in a reflective mood. He was sorry that there would be no 4th of July celebration. He found Americans to be a rather dour lot, and thought we should loosen up.

On our few festive occasions we ought to be free and easy; throw off our Yankee matter-of-fact, straight-laced demeanor, and have a good time; stop counting dollars and cents, shut up our journals and ledgers, and banish from our minds all calculations on the speculations or trades of the day following.

West also acknowledged that there were lingering hard feelings from the Civil War (only two years past).

We regret too, that there is not that degree of harmony throughout our family of States that there ought to be but hope that before another anniversary, we shall be so ‘reconstructed,’ North and South, that we can unite as one people, united in heart and sentiment, as we are technically, in a perpetual Union.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
