Golden History Moment
Throughout World War II, there were many announcements that asked Golden’s housewives to save cooking fats. I always wondered what the War Production Board did with it, so last night I checked, and found a helpful video picturing Minnie Mouse and Pluto.
I learned that fats make glycerin and glycerin makes explosives! The war had recently ended, but in late September, 1945, the government was still urging people to save fat. Golden had several Official Fat Collecting Stations, at Chuck’s Market, Reimer Red & White, Meyer’s Market, the Golden Mercantile, and Ben’s Grocery.
Many thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
