CITY MEETINGS
6:30PM Historic Preservation Board Meeting @ City Hall
The Board will open with a chance for public comment before moving into study session, where they will discuss the Historic Preservation Guidelines.
This group has been struggling to find a balance between preserving Golden’s historic buildings and preserving property rights. Last year a new property owner demolished a historic (and very deteriorated) home in the 8th & 9th Street Historic District and plans to replace it with a large, modern style house. Now a long-time property owner across the street has requested that the board provide a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) to demolish the two historic homes that he owns across from the new/modern house. His plan had been to restore and live in one of the homes, but he thinks the historic neighborhood has lost its integrity with the introduction of large new houses.
The meeting minutes included in tonight’s meeting packet includes a summary of the September 13th discussion about the new house/historic district controversy. You can also watch that discussion in the meeting recording.
6PM Highway Noise Mitigation Community Meeting @ Community Center
Golden Public Works alongside Coffman Engineers will seek feedback from the community on Highway Noise Mitigation during a community meeting on Oct. 11, 6 – 7:30 p.m. in the Golden Community Center Bear Creek Room.
Community members will learn about the city ordinance related to noise, ways that noise can be diminished, efforts on the state level, and opportunities will be provided for residents to help prioritize projects each year moving forward.
We encourage you to attend the presentation in-person, or provide your comments online at Guiding Golden (the Guiding Golden project will be posted some time today).
PUBLIC COMMENTS (CONTINUED)
Yesterday, I included a link to some public comments that were sent to City Council. Quite a few of you followed the link.
Here’s a link to another note sent to Council. The sender missed the City’s 3PM deadline to have them included in the meeting packet. I thought they were an insightful bunch of questions about the 2024 budget, so I offered to post them here:

GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
The October 11, 1917 Colorado Transcript offered this sage advice from Linder Hardware:
Regarding the first suggestion–the United States had entered the Great War (World War I) the previous April. So the two best ways to save money were to go to Europe and fight in the trenches or to stay in Golden and shop at Linder Hardware.
Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
