GOLDEN HISTORY MOMENT
As if 2020 wasn’t already surreal enough—with a global pandemic and everyone walking around wearing masks—it was also a year of many wildfires in Colorado.
The Pine Gulch fire, which started on July 31 and continued until September 22nd, burned 139,007 acres in Mesa and Garfield Counties. It was the largest wildfire in Colorado history.
That distinction lasted until it was overtaken by the Cameron Peak fire (August 13th-December 2nd). That one burned 208,663 acres and destroyed 469 structures in Larimer County. It became the new “largest wildfire in Colorado history.”
Even many miles away, here in Golden, our air quality was poor for a solid two months. The one good thing that came of all those fires was the extraordinary sunrises and sunsets caused by the smoky air. Many of them made appearances in the new feature that I started that year–Golden Eye Candy.
Thanks to the many local photographers who sent me sunrise and sunset photos that summer!
